Maastricht University Green Office
We are the student-driven university department of Maastricht University, initiating and coordinating sustainability projects by empowering students and staff members.
Many student initiatives were working on sustainability, but with little impact on the institution itself. The university itself had an environmental coordinator and sustainability committee. The Green Office was established as the first of its kind in 2010 to empower more students to advance changes within the university. The GO grew over time, by taking over more responsibilities, enlarging its budget and successfully lobbying for a PhD position to become part of the team.
As the graph below shows, the team consits of 8 student employees (paid 14 hours per week). It also includes a PhD candidate who partially works in the Green Office team while he is primarily based in his research institute. The Green Office works with volunteers ad-hoc. The students are supported by the environmental advisor who is part of facility services.
